Built in the early 1930’s, this charming 1218 Heights Boulevard Houston bungalow has been restored and expanded to include Palmer’s fine art gallery, art studio, and his private living quarters. John purchased the Houston home in 2006 and new construction began in early 2008. Builder Terri Robinson with Construction by Design, Inc. worked painstakingly on the project to ensure that the historic bungalow was preserved while the chic nature of modern art would be prominent. The elegant yet functional design was the brainchild of Houston Heights Designer Sam Gianukos with Creole Design.

Highlights of the bungalow include a majestic mosaic tiling by Houston Heights artist Chris Silkwood in the home’s original built-in china cabinet, “clear story” windows that allow both natural light and wall space for Palmer’s artwork and original floors and ceilings. The chic art gallery addition, or “Great Room,” is the modern complement to the historic bungalow. It has a custom hand-stained floor which gives a natural base to the contemporary art space. One of the most beautiful and regal components of the Great Room are the two Founding Collector Walls which etch names of prominent collectors in black granite. Behind the main gallery, the complex has a massive, climate-controlled Art Archives for the storage of both sold and currently available paintings. Connected to the Art Archives you’ll find Palmer’s private wine cellar as well as Palmer’s Ceramics Room with a personal kiln.

    "The
The John Palmer Art Gallery & Studio is located at 1218 Heights Boulevard in the heart of Houston’s Historic Heights.
    "Lincoln-Garden"
“Lincoln Garden” (a serene patch of land that features a massive collaborate sculpture of Abraham Lincoln by the famed David Adickes and John Ross Palmer.)
    "Great
Great Room featuring the Founding Collectors Wall.

Palmer creates in his upstairs art studio, which is linked to John Ross Palmer’s “apartment.” The living quarters are spacious and comfortable to permit a relaxing home separate from the business of art. Palmer was most honored to have his home featured in the 2009 Houston Heights Association’s Spring Home & Garden Tour.

In 2014, construction was completed on the state-of-the-art “Chrysalis,” the gallery and art studios addition that serves as the epicenter of Palmer’s art movement of Escapism and training ground for the artists accepted into his Escapist Mentorship Program. The empowering, 1,600 sq. ft. structure includes the Franklin Gallery on the lower level and Jennings, Patriarca, and Goehausen Studios on the second story.

    "John
John Ross Palmer’s private art studio.
    "The
The Chrysalis serves as the epicenter of Palmer’s art movement of Escapism.

After the construction of the Chrysalis, Palmer personally did the landscaping between the buildings that includes a bubbling pond, bamboo forest, and the “Lincoln Garden” (a serene patch of land that features a massive collaborate sculpture of Abraham Lincoln by the famed David Adickes and John Ross Palmer.

In the Summer of 2020, construction on the atrium was completed. The beautiful glass enclosure allows for a climate-controlled connection between the main gallery and the Chrysalis.
