Palmer went through a lily pad phase around 2016 because of a large commission project he secured for a hospital system in Florida. Artwork for hospitals needs to be uplifting, and in sync with Palmer’s famous mantra, Art is Healing. Palmer went with a lily pad theme, yes, as an homage to Monet, but also because the subject matter itself is symbolic of the healing process – with the gorgeous blooms appearing to grow out of nowhere with an invisible anchor. Palmer is a self-taught artist, and so he created scores of smaller lily pad paintings as practice in advance of the final pieces for the project. Since that time, he has thrived on creating very large, contemporary lily pad pieces that exude his unique Palmer energy.
